BOOK IT! AT HOME

A Parent’s Guide to Raising a Reader

You just heard from your child’s teacher that the class will be participating in the BOOK IT! Program. Here is some info about the program and how you can be a partner at home to ensure your child’s success.

What is the BOOK IT! Program?

Created in 1984 by Pizza Hut, BOOK IT! fosters a lifelong love of reading by motivating children to read by rewarding their reading accomplishments with praise, recognition and pizza!

Why is our school participating in the BOOK IT! Program?

The BOOK IT! Program is free to K-6 grade classrooms and homeschools. This flexible program allows teachers to set an individual reading goal for your child, based on their ability, and when your child meets that goal each month (October – March) they are recognized by their teacher and awarded with a certificate redeemable for a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza® from Pizza Hut.

Teachers know, and research has found, that kids are motivated by praise and recognition (and pizza!), so the more often they meet their goals and are recognized for doing so, the more they will learn to love reading. Encouraging your child to read (or be read to) for just 20 minutes per day will expose them to 1.8 million words a year, setting them on a path to educational success.

How Do I Get Involved?

Take an interest: Know your child’s monthly reading goal, and talk about it with your child on a regular basis, monitoring progress toward their monthly goal. Help them keep track of their progress on their paper reading log or with the BOOK IT! app.

Take action: Set aside time to read at home every day in order to make progress toward the monthly goal. Consider allowing your child to read a book of their choice in order to reinforce that reading can be done for the fun of it, not just for school assignments.

Take the lead: Show your child how important, and fun, it is to read by reading yourself or reading to, or with, your child. Initiate trips to the library or the book store, and allow your child to pick books that interest them.

Take pride: Celebrate when your child meets their goal each month. Acknowledge their hard work and dedication to reinforce the value of their accomplishment. Then schedule some special one-on-one time with your child by taking them to redeem their Reading Award Certificate for a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza at Pizza Hut.

You are an important partner in your child’s educational success! Your involvement in helping your child meet their monthly reading goal through the BOOK IT! Program demonstrates your commitment to being a reading role model. Way to raise a reader!
